How much bed space does a pregnancy pillow take?
This is the first question couples ask, and almost nobody answers it. When we surveyed the English-language results on this subject in August 2026, only one page touched on size and bed space at all, and none of them addressed the partner. Here is what you need to decide before ordering.
Why the stated dimension does not answer your question
A U-shaped pillow is measured flat: you are given its total length and width, like a sheet. But you are not going to sleep on a flat object — you are going to slide dedans. The two arms close in around your body, and the whole thing takes up far less width than the catalogue measurement.
That is why a product page can state a large figure without the pillow being bulky — and equally, why a reassuring figure tells you nothing about the reality once it is in place. The two measurements do not describe the same thing, and it is the second one that decides your nights when you share a bed.
Measure your bed first
Standard mattress widths — and they are not the same on every market:
| Bed | Width (US) | UK / AU | With a U-shaped pillow |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin / Single | 38 in | 36 in / 92 cm | No constraint — you have it to yourself |
| Full / Double | 54 in | 53 in / 135 cm | Sharing works, but it has to be organised |
| Queen | 60 in | 60 in / 152 cm | Comfortable for two |
| King | 76 in | 59-72 in / 150-183 cm | No constraint |
⚠️ A UK king is narrower than a US king, and an Australian king narrower again. If you are comparing against an American guide, the name will mislead you — measure.
Measure yours rather than trusting the label: a second-hand full can be an inch or two under, and two inches count when you are sharing.
The two-minute test
Before you even order, you can simulate the space with what you already own:
- Take two ordinary pillows and a rolled-up blanket.
- Arrange them in a U around you, lying on your side: one in front, one behind, the blanket as the curve under your head.
- Ask your partner to lie down normally beside you.
- Measure the total width the two of you take up, and compare it with your mattress.
This is not a substitute for the real pillow — the real one is more compact and more stable — but it is the upper bound. If it fits with pillows, it will fit with the pillow.
Three adjustments that change everything when you share
- Point the opening towards the outside of the bed, not towards your partner. The back arm then acts as a divider, and the bulk stays on your side.
- Shift four to six inches towards your edge. The pillow follows, and you get that width back in the middle of the bed.
- Move the pillow down so the opening reaches mid-thigh. Set too high, it spills sideways without holding anything more.
Something couples usually discover afterwards: the back arm also damps the movement that travels through the mattress. Several buyers report their partner sleeping better than before — of the 129 written reviews we went through, six mention the partner without being asked, and one writes that the pillow is “used daily by my pregnant wife and me”.
If you have a full-size bed
This is the most common case, and the most argued over. Sharing works, provided you apply the three adjustments above. If your partner sleeps badly whatever you do, there are two options: a C-shaped model, which takes less room but has to be turned over at every time you change sides; or a straight bolster to hold the knees alone. The U remains the only shape that holds when sommeil devient agité.
Our pillow dimensions
The stated dimensions are 51 in long, 27.5 in wide and 7 in thick. They come from the dimensioned drawing and appear on the product page. Remember what the top of this page says: those 51 inches describe the pillow laid out flat. Once closed around you, it occupe nettement moins large.
That is why the pillow test above is worth more to you than one more figure on a spec sheet: it measures your bed, with your partner, in your room. No published dimension can do that for you.
And if the arithmetic turns out wrong once it is unpacked, you have 30 days to send it back. On an item whose bulk is the main unknown, that is the guarantee that counts — not one more decimal in a tableau.
Recorded by The Pregnancy Pillow, August 2026: analysis of 129 written reviews, six of which mention the partner without being prompted. The mattress widths quoted are published national standards for each market, not measurements of our product. See our how we test.
