Best pregnancy pillow: the five criteria that decide
Most comparisons line up fifteen models and leave you to decide. We take it the other way round: here is what to look at, in the order that matters, with what each choice actually changes once you are êtes couchée.
1. The shape: U, C or I
This is the criterion that settles all the others, and it comes down to one question: do you turn over during the night? If you do, only the U saves you from taking your setup apart and rebuilding it every time.
| Shape | What it holds | Turning over | Room taken |
|---|---|---|---|
| U | Back, bump and legs at the same time | You pivot inside it, nothing to reposition | The most |
| C | One side at a time | You have to flip the whole thing | Medium |
| I (bolster) | Legs, or bump — not both | Repositioned every time | The least |
The I is the least obtrusive and the cheapest; it suits you if you already sleep well and simply want something between your knees. The C supports properly but assumes you keep the same position. The U is the only one that holds when sleep gets restless — that is, in the third trimester, exactly when you need it most. That is the shape of our pregnancy pillow.
2. The filling, and above all how it holds
Three families are out there: polyester fibre, microbeads and natural materials such as kapok. The real question is not which is the finest, but which still holds its volume after a month of nights.
Fibre gives the best balance of support and upkeep, and comes back to shape with a shake. Microbeads follow the body very closely, but they settle and make noise when you turn over — a detail almost no product page mentions, and one that wakes you. Kapok is firm and natural, heavier, and cannot be washed. We go through all three in our guide on filling.
3. Firmness
A pillow that is too soft is crushed under the weight of the bump within a few nights and holds nothing: you end up sleeping on flat fabric. Too firm, it will not mould to you and creates a pressure point under the hip. The right level is judged with one simple gesture: press the middle of the arm with your palm. It should sink about an inch and a half and then push back, not flatten to the fabric. We go through it in detail in firm or soft.
4. The cover
It decides how long the thing lasts. A pregnancy pillow is used for months, in a bed, every night: without a removable cover, the first spill condemns it. Check three things: that it comes off completely (and not just on one face), that it goes in the machine, and at what temperature. A cover that washes on a cold cycle can be cleaned as often as needed without shrinking.
Of the 129 written reviews we went through for our model, 20 bring up the cover and how easily it comes off. Nobody cares about this when buying, and everybody talks about it afterwards.
5. Bed space — the forgotten criterion
This is the first real objection couples raise, and the one nobody addresses. A U-shaped pillow takes up roughly half a full-size bed once you are in position. In a queen, sharing is comfortable; in a full, it has to be negotiated; in a single, it does not work at all.
⚠️ Be careful with stated dimensions: they describe the pillow laid out flat, not the width it takes once closed around you. Those are two very different measurements, and it is the second one you care about. We measure it in our guide on how much bed space it takes.
What does not deserve your attention
The pattern and the colour change nothing about your sleep — take the one you like. The number of seams or of advertised “support zones” is a product-page argument: a U has two arms and a curve, however you count them. And a very long warranty on a textile bedding item will not help you: what matters is being able to send it back in the first weeks if the size does not suit.
And after the birth?
A U-shaped pillow turns into feeding support: set around your waist while seated, it holds the forearm carrying your baby and brings them to the right height. If feeding is your main use, a dedicated model will be more compact and easier to handle. If you want one item for both periods, the U does both.
In short
Choose the shape according to how you sleep, a filling that holds, a medium firmness, a removable cover, and check the width it actually takes before ordering. Our U-shaped pregnancy pillow carries 481 ratings of 4 and 5 stars, and you have 30 days to try it at home — a pregnancy pillow is judged after several nights, not on unpacking it.
