How to choose a belly band for pregnancy
Search for the best belly band and you get lists. Lists are useless here, because a belt that suits a 27-inch waist does nothing on a 39-inch one, whatever it is called. Here are the four things to look at instead, in the order that matters.
1. It comes in sizes
This is the single most reliable signal, and it takes two seconds to check on any listing. A support belt that comes in sizes was designed around tension: the maker had to decide how much stretch corresponds to how much waist. A one-size belt was designed around stretch alone, which is fine for a garment and useless for carrying a load.
Ours comes in four — M, L, XL and XXL, from 27.5 to 51 inches of waist. Measure yourself before ordering rather than guessing from your usual clothing size: a belt is worn low, under the bump, and that measurement is not the one on your jeans.
2. Where the tension sits
A band that spreads its tension evenly across the whole belly compresses rather than supports — it feels tight without carrying anything. You can tell them apart by looking: a support belt has a narrower, firmer lower section and a wider, softer upper one. A garment band is uniform all the way up.
Our guide on what a support belt actually does goes through the mechanics.
3. You can tighten it once it is on
Adjustability is not a luxury on this item: your bump changes every few weeks, and so does the tension you need. A belt you can only pull on has one setting, and it will be right for about a fortnight.
Check that it fastens after being positioned, not before. That is what lets you set the tension standing up — and a belt adjusted seated is loose the moment you stand. Our guide on how to wear one covers the placement.
4. What it does under clothes
A support belt is worn against the skin or over a thin layer, under your clothes. So two practical things matter more than they sound: whether it stays flat enough not to show through a top, and whether the fastening sits somewhere that does not dig in when you sit down.
Bulky fastenings at the front are the usual problem. You notice them in a car seat, not in a shop.
Three things to expect
| What happens | Why | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| You put it on and take it off several times a day | It is made for stretches of activity, not continuous wear | Keep it where you get dressed, not in a drawer |
| It needs refastening every few weeks | Your bump changes; the tension has to follow | Recheck with the two-finger test each fortnight |
| The wrong size is worse than none | Too loose carries nothing, too tight stops supporting | Measure your waist low, under the bump, before ordering |
Common questions
What kind of belly band is best for pregnancy?
The one sized to your waist rather than sold one-size, with the tension concentrated under the bump rather than spread evenly across it. Those two things decide whether a belt carries weight or just sits there. Everything else — colour, brand, number of panels — changes nothing about what it does.
Which belly band is the most supportive?
Support comes from tension you can adjust, not from thickness. A wide soft band feels substantial and carries very little; a narrower band with a proper fastening carries more. If you cannot tighten it after putting it on, it will be loose within an hour.
What are the downsides of wearing a pregnancy belt?
Three worth knowing. It is worn for stretches of activity rather than all day, so there is a putting-on and taking-off routine. It has to be refastened as your bump changes, roughly every few weeks. And a belt sized wrong is worse than no belt — too loose it does nothing, too tight it stops being a support.
Does the price tell you anything?
Very little. A belt is elastic, fabric and a fastening. What varies between a cheap one and an expensive one is usually finishing and branding, not the mechanics. What does vary meaningfully is whether it comes in sizes.
